Sam Houston National Forest
The Sam Houston National Forest covers about 163,000 acres north of Houston across Montgomery, San Jacinto, and Walker counties, and the entire forest is managed as a Wildlife Management Area. Its pine and hardwood bottoms, creek drainages, and thick understory give a mobile saddle hunter plenty of edges and pinch points to slip into away from roads. It is one of the most accessible large public deer-hunting tracts in southeast Texas, popular for both archery and firearms whitetail hunting.
Hours / Access
Open to the public year-round; legal hunting hours are generally about 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset (TPWD sets exact times). Check WMA-specific rules and any draw-hunt period closures.
Public access requires a valid Texas hunting license plus the Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit to hunt the WMA. Antlerless deer during the general season may require a limited drawn permit issued by the USFS via TPWD's drawn-hunt system.
Seasons
- Archery: Statewide archery-only deer season typically runs roughly late September through the end of October.
- Firearms: The general (firearms) deer season typically opens the first Saturday of November and runs into early-to-mid January depending on region.
- Muzzleloader: A late muzzleloader season is offered in designated counties, typically in January after the general season.
Species
- White-tailed deer
- Feral hog

TPWD Public Hunting & Drawn Hunts
Sam Houston NF is self-guided public/WMA hunting (Annual Public Hunting Permit); no specific verified outfitter found for the forest. Texas has no single official statewide licensed-outfitter directory, so use TPWD's public-hunting/drawn-hunt resource.
