Sumter National Forest
Sumter National Forest spans nearly 371,000 acres across three ranger districts (Andrew Pickens in the mountains, plus Enoree and Long Cane in the Piedmont) and is enrolled in SCDNR's Wildlife Management Area program. The rolling Piedmont hardwoods, oak ridges, and creek bottoms suit a mobile, run-and-gun saddle setup, letting hunters relocate between food and bedding as pressure shifts. The Central Piedmont unit posts harvest rates comparable to or above the statewide average, while the mountain district holds lower deer density but the potential for quality bucks.
Hours / Access
Open to the public year-round; legal hunting hours are generally about 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Confirm exact shooting hours with SCDNR.
Free public access on national forest land enrolled as WMA. A SC hunting license, big game permit, and WMA permit are required to hunt deer on these public lands. Check current district closures (the Long Cane district has had Hurricane Helene-related closures).
